Lachine Canal Sea Kayak Club

Who said the gym is the only place to get a workout? Its summer - take it outside! As a club member, you pay an annual fee and have access to our entire kayak fleet for the whole summer! DetailsOur Lachine Canal location has 32 different kayaks of all shapes and sizes, suitable for total beginners and advanced sea kayakers. Members may select from more recreational (beginner) models, mid-range sea kayaks or high end fibreglass (Gold members only) sea kayaks. Both solo kayaks and tandem (2 place) kayaks are available to members. (A $10 per hour surcharge must be paid if one person in the tandem is not a member. A buddy pass may also be used in lieu of the surcharge. No charge for Gold Members)All safety equipment (PFD, rope, whistle, pump, paddle) is provided by H2O Adventures. A course in not obligatory but highly recommended for those with no training. Good technique will make you more efficient and comfortable in your kayak. Members receive 10% of the cost of a course.Buddy PassesWe believe that kayaking is a sport best shared with friends and family so each membership comes with a set amount of Buddy Passes. These passes allow you to paddle with a friend or guest for up to 2-hours with each pass at no charge. Buddy Passes are noted on your membership card and punched when used.RulesKayaks are available on a first come first served basis. As such, it is advised to reserve ahead of time. Unless otherwise specified or agreed upon, there is a maximum of 2 hours per rental day (exception are happily made during quiet periods.) Kayaks must remain on the Canal; Take-away rentals are not permitted. Membership cards are not transferable to others.Membership Cards are not exchangeable and a photo ID must be presented along with the card on each visit. Family memberships are the only cards that may be shared among people. Choose from our popular eco-friendly electric boats, wide range of kayaks, pedal boats and even 12-passenger voyageur canoes! Personal floatation devices and all safety equipement is provided. Kayaking Lessons

This course is a great way to discover the basics in just two short hours.You will learn how to paddle effectively and control your kayak so that you may spend more time enjoying the sport rather then being frustrated by poor technique.ContentBoat entry, forward and reverse strokes, sweep stroke (turning) bracing, safety equipment.ScheduleOffered Wednesday nights 6:30-8:30 pm and Sundays from 1-3 pm. Company BBQ

Through our Team Building Montreal division, we offer several types of popular Company BBQ events. We can host a traditional catered corporate BBQ, a combination of BBQ and leisure activities such as an enjoyable paddle on the Lachine canal or a company BBQ combined with other team building activities or experiential seminars.Try the BBQ Challenge: an event where teams compete to earn a 5-Star Restaurant rating.Starting with no money and very limited resources, teams must earn funds by completing challenges that test their proficiency in communication, cooperation, leadership, creativity and ability to work under pressure. Food can then be purchased by teams at a local market such as the nearby Atwater Market.Stars are earned according to each team’s ability to meet certain requirements. For example, higher points are awarded for: * Respecting a budget * Creativity and diversity in the menu * Purchasing produce that originates less than 30km from the market * Avoiding items with a lot of packaging * Generating less wasteAlways an entertaining, morale-builder, this fun activity is designed to comfortably accommodate everyone from the novice cook to the master chef. We are located in the Lachine Canal Historic Park on the south side of the Lachine Canal, just east of the Atwater pedestrian bridge.

Getting here:

By Public Transportaton: Simply get off at Métro Lionel Groulx and walk South past the Atwater Market along Atwater. Cross the foot bridge and then follow the bike path east and you will see us immediately.

By car: From outside the Downtown Montreal area, take HWY 15 and get off at Atwater avenue. Follow Atwater until St. Patrick and turn right. Find a parking space anywhere on a side street. Follow the bike path to the Atwater pedestrian bridge and you will see us on the right.

From downtown you may prefer to take Atwater south until just past Notre-Dame. Ample parking is available around the Atwater Market.

Simply cross the pedestrian bridge and you will see us on your left.

History

The idea of a canal circumventing the Sault-Saint-Louis (Lachine Rapids) goes back to the very first years that followed the foundation of Ville-Marie (Montréal).It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that the dream would become a reality. The Lachine Canal became a necessity for the Montréal merchants who sought to make their city one of the main hubs of North American trade. Work began in 1821. The canal was completed in 1825.The first canal enabled the passage of small flat-bottomed sailboats. With the increase in shipping and in tonnage, it had to be enlarged twice the work was carried out from 1843 to 1848 and from 1873 to 1884.
